"Generating sustained earnings growth is a tough task for all companies - regardless of industry, geography, age, size or economic environment. This observation is powerfully evidenced by the findings of Prof rita McGrath of Columbia University, published in the Harvard Business Review. Examining 4793 companies over the period 2000 to 2009, all with market value of more than $1bn, McGrath found that fewer than 10% of firms were able to produce uninterrupted real earnings growth ahead of global real economic growth over periods of five years. To most investors this comes across as a surprisingly low figure. Even more remarkable is that only 10 of the almost 5000 firms were able to deliver uninterrupted real earnings growth ahead of global real economic growth over the 10 year period 2000-2009."
